How may times have I told you that I lived in Gran Canaria? Quite a few, I know, but here I am again. After telling you how to make yummy Tortilla and tasty Papas Arrugadas, I’m back with Churros.
Churros are actually not that traditional in Gran Canaria, they can be found more easily on mainland, Spain. In terms of food and some traditions, Gran Canaria is closer to South America, but of course Churros are pretty well known and I had the chance to have them in several occasions, especially as an energy boost-breakfast after a long sleepless night.
Yes, they are fried, but’s that’s the reason why they are so good. We all know that fried food tastes better 🙂
INGREDIENTS
- 180gr of flour
- 300ml of water
- 5 eggs
- 50ml of oil
- 50gr of sugar, plus extra for dusting
- plenty of vegetable oil for frying
METHOD
- Pour the water into a saucepan, add the oil and bring it to a boil.
- Now 1 teaspoon of sugar.
- Take the saucepann off the heat
- Now one by one, whisking all the way through, add the eggs.
- Transfer this mixture into the bowl of your stand mixer, with the “whisk attachment”.
- Add the remaining sugar.
- Pre-heat a deep frying pan with the oil.
- Beat the mixture for a couple of minutes, not more than that. Until you get a smooth creamy mixture.
- Take a piping bag with a star-tip and fill it up with the churro-mixture.
- When the oil is very hot, pipe a long “log” of mixture, about 15cm long
- Pipe just 2 maximun 3 churros at a time, they need space to “move” around in the frying pan and you must flip them over a few times.
- When they are ready (it will take about 4-5 minutes) roll them into the extra sugar.
Ready.
Oh, I forgot to mention how they are typically served and eaten.
Dunked into a hot chocolate.
Isn’t it a marvellous idea?!
